Sedona in December: Weather, Events, and What to Pack

December might be Sedona's best-kept secret. The summer heat is long gone, the fall crowds have thinned and the red rocks look even sharper against crisp blue winter skies. Some mornings, you might even wake up to a dusting of snow on the buttes.

Add thousands of glowing luminarias, a Christmas tree lighting and some of the clearest night skies of the year, and you have a holiday trip that feels nothing like the rest of the country's winter. Here is what to expect from the weather, which 2026 events to plan around and exactly what to pack.

Sedona Weather in December

December average
Daytime highAbout 57°F
Nighttime lowAbout 31°F, often at or below freezing
PrecipitationAbout 1.5 inches for the month, falling as rain or snow
SnowLight and occasional, usually about an inch for the whole month
SunsetAround 5:20 p.m.
Typical skyMostly sunny and dry

What that means for your trip: Days are comfortable for hiking in layers. Mornings and evenings are cold, so plan outdoor dinners and stargazing with a warm jacket. Snow rarely sticks for long in town, but when it falls, it creates one of the most photographed sights in Arizona: white snow on red rock. If you see snow in the forecast, get out early. It often melts by midday.

Shorter days: With sunset around 5:20 p.m., plan hikes to finish by mid-afternoon. Golden hour comes early, which makes sunset photos easy to fit in before dinner.
