The Perfect Fall Weekend Near Bell Rock: A 48-Hour Village of Oak Creek Plan

The Perfect Fall Weekend Near Bell Rock: A 48-Hour Village of Oak Creek Plan

Most Sedona visitors drive straight through the Village of Oak Creek on their way into town. They’re missing the best base for an outdoor weekend. The village sits at the foot of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, with trailheads minutes away, easy parking and a relaxed, local feel.

Fall is the ideal time to do it: cool mornings for hiking, warm afternoons and long, clear nights. Here’s a 48-hour plan that keeps you close to Bell Rock and makes the most of the season.

Before You Go

  • Book dinners ahead. Fall weekends are busy.
  • Get a Red Rock Pass. You’ll need one at the Bell Rock trailheads. Daily passes are $5 and weekly passes are $15.
  • Pack layers. Mornings can start in the 40s and afternoons reach the 70s in October.
  • Pick your weekend. October 24 to 25 lines up with the Hunter’s Moon on Sunday night. November 21 to 22 puts you just ahead of the Beaver Moon, a supermoon, on November 23 to 24.

Friday Evening: Arrive and Settle In

Aim to arrive before dark. The drive from Phoenix takes about two hours, and the Village of Oak Creek is the first part of Sedona you reach coming up State Route 179.

Check in, then have a relaxed dinner nearby. The village has good options within a few minutes, from wood-fired pizza at Rotten Johnny’s to creative burgers at Butterfly Burger, or country-style Italian at Cucina Rustica. Get to bed early. Tomorrow starts at sunrise.

Saturday: Bell Rock at Sunrise, Then an Easy Day

Sunrise: the Courthouse Butte Loop. Start at the Bell Rock trailheads just north of the village. The loop circles Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte in about four miles, with little climbing and views that change the whole way. First light turns both formations pink and orange, and the trail is quiet until mid-morning.

Mid-morning: a big breakfast. Refuel at a local spot like Miley’s Cafe or Red Rock Cafe, both popular for hearty breakfasts.

Late morning: the Red Rock Ranger District Visitor Center. It’s on State Route 179, just south of the village, with trail maps, rangers who can answer questions and Red Rock Passes for sale.

Afternoon: slow down. Head north about ten minutes to the Chapel of the Holy Cross, or spend the afternoon resting. You’ll want energy for tomorrow.

Evening: golden hour, then dinner. Watch the sunset light hit Bell Rock from a quiet spot along the pathway, then have dinner by a fire pit. ShadowRock Tap + Table at the Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock has outdoor fire pits and s’mores.

Sunday: Cathedral Rock, Then the Full Moon

Early morning: Cathedral Rock. This is the big hike of the weekend: short, steep and hands-on, with one of the best views in Sedona. On Sundays, the trailhead lot is closed to private cars, so park at the North SR 179 Park and Ride and take the free shuttle. It’s a short drive from the village.

Not up for a scramble? Swap in a second easy walk, like the quieter east side of the Courthouse Butte Loop, or a jeep tour for the rough back roads you can’t drive yourself.

Afternoon: rest and pack up. Late lunch in the village, then a slow afternoon.

Evening: the Hunter’s Moon (October 25). If you picked the October weekend, stay for moonrise. The full moon rises near sunset over the eastern horizon. Find a spot with an open view east, and watch it climb above the rocks. If you want to walk under it, our guide to full moon hikes in Sedona covers how to do it safely.
